Vanoc has done studies… observations let’s say… of the weather in February and how the schedule of events would have played out over the last few years. Last year, there would have been only a couple of minor delays with all events getting off on the correct day. The year before, there were a few more delays and a few events would have been postponed to another day but the Games would have finished on time. This is not upsetting information- it is simply stats and comparisons. It gives us an idea of what could possibly happen, but we know, it will likely be different.
In the same way the COC has looked at the results from last year’s World Championships. While they took place throughout the 2008-09 season, if we were to compress them into the 16 days of the Olympic Games we can look at a possible flow of results.
Recall that in the 2008-09 season, Canadian athletes won 29 World Championship medals and was the leading nation. The United States and Germany both won 28 medals.
Knowing that next year’s results and last year’s results can vary as much as last year’s weather and this year’s weather here is how the Canada’s results of the 2008-09 season would track us through the 2010 Olympic Games. The important thing to note is that Canada would have achieved its goal of “Owning the Podium” even though on Day 5, Canada would have been ranked as the 7th Nation by Medal total.

I’m sharing this information for no other reason than to impress upon you that the team’s goal of Owning the Podium is in fact a team effort. Like any racer who must understand the profile of their own racing; great start, great body of the event, great finish; if we understand the profile of our own team’s performance, then we can relax and focus on the moment and task at hand.
Know what you can expect and you have the power to control how you feel about it.
